- From Nomadic Life to Leadership -
Zakayo L. Kipuyo grew up in a nomadic community from his childhood to youth. He has many experiences of the challenges that children, especially girls and young women, go through growing up in the rural world. He grew up in a family of polygamy where his father had 11 wives, and he had more than 80 siblings. The family priorities were keeping cows and other domestic animals. School was seen as a place for those children who were lazy and not wanting to take responsibility.
Despite these challenges, Zakayo pursued education and later graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting and Finance Management and a Postgraduate degree in Project Management. With over ten years of experience in leadership and organizational management at a senior level, he played a significant role in East Africa’s strategic planning and organizational growth, leading work across Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
Defying the Odds: The First Graduate
In a community where education was not prioritized, Zakayo broke barriers by becoming the first child in his family of over 80 siblings to earn a degree. This achievement made him a catalyst for change, inspiring other children in his family and community to follow in his footsteps.
A Life-Changing Gift and a Lost Connection
Zakayo was supported during his first degree by a Dutch woman named Monique Jaamat, who recognized his determination and passion for education. She saw the impact he wanted to bring to the Maasai community and played a key role in his journey.
However, after completing college, Zakayo lost contact with Monique. He searched for her everywhere, hoping to express his gratitude for her incredible support, but he did not succeed in finding her.
Paying It Forward: The Birth of a Mission
Unable to reconnect with Monique, Zakayo made a vow: the best way to honor her kindness was to pay it forward. He committed himself to supporting rural communities facing challenges similar to those he had experienced growing up.
Believing that education is the key to liberating children and society from poverty, Zakayo founded Joy and Hope for Rural Community Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering children through education and creating opportunities for a better future.
